Gifts from Donor-Advised Funds

Donor-advised funds (DAFs) are one of the most convenient ways to support a cause you care about while maintaining the flexibility you desire.

A DAF is a little like a personal charitable savings account. It allows you to make a charitable contribution (into your DAF account ), receive an immediate tax deduction and then make gifts (recommend grants) over time to your favourite charities — like SickKids.

During your lifetime, you can recommend a grant from your donor-advised fund to make an immediate impact for the children and families we serve.

For donors who like more control and involvement, a DAF through the SickKids Charitable Giving Fund is the answer.

Backed by SickKids Foundation, a DAF with SickKids enables you to create a charitable legacy that can be personalized according to your wishes without the cost and administration of a private foundation. You can name the fund after a loved one or yourself and choose multiple charities as beneficiaries. By investing your charitable gift alongside SickKids Foundation endowments, you’ll receive excellent stewardship of your assets. Your fund’s rate of return will rank in the top 1 per cent of all charitable foundations in North America. You can also create a culture of giving that involves a couple, family, corporation, or group working together.

To establish a DAF with SickKids, you’ll need to make a minimum commitment of $100,000, either over five years, all at once, or through your estate. You can also name successors, the people who will preserve your legacy of giving. Each year, half of the fund’s annual support will go to SickKids, while the remaining 50% can be directed to other eligible charitable organizations of your choice.

When you establish a DAF, you receive a tax receipt for your initial donation as well as those in the future. If you use appreciated securities to establish your fund, you are exempt from capital gains tax.

Create Your Legacy of Philanthropy

The final distribution of contributions remaining in your DAF after your lifetime can be designated when you create or update your fund.

If you decide to change your beneficiary designation to include SickKids, would you let us know? We would like to recognize you for your generosity and ensure that your gift is used as you intend.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions about setting up your legacy gift or if you need more information.

6 ways you can make an impact with your donor-advised fund

Memorialize, honor, or commemorate a loved one or an event.

Avoid capital gains by first transferring appreciated stock to your DAF and then gifting it in minutes.

Teach your loved ones about charity and why you believe in giving back.

Build a sense of community (and make a bigger impact) by forming “giving circles” with other donor-advised fund owners including friends and family members.

Bundle your charitable gifts (doing so could result in an opportunity to itemize your deductions in the same year).

Leave all or a portion of your account to charity simply by changing your beneficiary designation.

We hope you will consider naming SickKids as a beneficiary of your account. You may even designate SickKids to receive a portion of the account value, leaving the remaining portion for your children or grandchildren to continue your legacy of philanthropy.
