Your Impact

“Children are the future of our society. If you educate and look after a child in every way, everyone benefits.”

—Joan and Gordon Stevenson, SickKids Supporters

When you support SickKids, you help us save lives, find new cures and provide world-class care.

SickKids treats everything from broken arms and appendicitis to rare brain cancers and congenital heart defects. Every year, some 100,000 patients come to us from across the province, country and even the world for specialized care, while our scientists are making important medical discoveries every day. For all our triumphs — clinical and research — donor support has been instrumental, helping create our storied research institute, where scientists discovered the CF gene, and continue to crack the code of childhood cancers and heart disease. Donations have enabled SickKids to be Ontario’s go-to hospital for intensive care, organ transplants, and complex heart surgeries. It is because of our donors that we have grown from a community hospital to a global leader in child health — the root of lifelong health.

You also ensure that our mission is carried out in the following key areas:

Precision Child Health

Your support helps SickKids pioneer a revolutionary approach to pediatric healthcare that delivers the right care to the right child at the right time.

Precision Child Health represents a paradigm shift in children’s healthcare, moving from traditional one-size-fits-all treatments to personalized approaches tailored to each child’s unique genetic makeup, environment, and lifestyle factors. By leveraging cutting-edge genomic technologies, artificial intelligence, and data analytics, SickKids is developing targeted treatments that maximize effectiveness while minimizing side effects.

When you support Precision Child Health, you’re helping SickKids build a future where every child receives the exact care they need. Your legacy gift ensures this life-changing work continues for the next 150 years, giving generations of children their best chance at a healthy future.

“Precision Child Health isn’t just about treating the disease—it’s about treating the individual child. Your support helps us develop personalized approaches that consider each child’s unique genetic makeup, environment, and individual needs.”

First in Canada: Revolutionary Treatment for Epilepsy

Your Impact: Pioneering Responsive Neurostimulation

In a groundbreaking Canadian first, SickKids successfully implanted a Responsive Neurostimulation (RNS) device in a teen with drug-resistant epilepsy. This revolutionary therapy monitors brain activity and delivers small bursts of stimulation to intercept seizures before they occur. While not yet approved by Health Canada for widespread use, this milestone achievement gives hope for future treatments across Canada and around the world.

The success of this procedure was made possible through the dedication of SickKids’ Comprehensive Epilepsy Program team, led by Drs. Elizabeth Donner and George Ibrahim, along with substantial advocacy by Sara Breitbart, Nurse Practitioner in the Division of Neurosurgery.

Your support helps make transformative advancements in medical care for patients like this brave teen and their family. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of so many.

Re-imagining Our Campus

With your support, we are constructing a state-of-the-art hospital and patient support building to accommodate the best that medicine can offer, matching our world-class expertise with the best clinical spaces for patients.

We’re a world-leading pediatric hospital, but parts of our building don’t meet modern building codes. We treat kids from across Canada (and even the world) in clinical spaces that are cramped, worn, and inefficient. Without a new hospital, we can’t keep fighting the greatest challenges in child health.

Because of donors like you, SickKids will raise a building as extraordinary as the care inside its walls.

See how newly-constructed spaces like our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) will transform the experience for our tiniest patients and their families.

Funding Breakthrough research

The first successful separation of conjoined twins. The first kidney transplant from a living donor. Discovering the gene responsible for cystic fibrosis. Our long record of research breakthroughs is living proof of our fight against childhood illness and disease.

Your investments in science help speed our ability to take leading research and turn it into groundbreaking treatments and cures. Through clinical trials, support for research and funding for our scientists, you help us transform the way we do medicine, to make a bigger impact on patients, sooner.

Because of your support, SickKids’ 2,000+ researchers can continue fighting to make advances every day that bring new hope to children and their families.

Partnering for Better Care

Every year, nearly 7 million children around the world die from preventable diseases. SickKids is devoted to helping as many of them as possible – here at home and abroad.

Your generosity allows us to continue developing a seamless system of children’s health care by reducing fragmentation and strengthening global partnerships. It also fuels the fight to ensure patients are treated in the right place, at the right time, by the right partners.

Your support expands initiatives that build capacity both at home and across the globe —delivering sustainable health care worldwide and ensuring children can receive the integrated care they need no matter where they live.

See how our local and global partnerships will save kids like Kael, who was diagnosed with one of the rarest immune system disorders in the world.

Your Impact: Jordan’s Story

When donors like you support SickKids, you make breakthrough treatments possible for children like Jordan.

Jordan was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at just four years old. Thanks to donor support, SickKids specialists were able to use precision medicine approaches to analyze his unique tumor and develop a personalized treatment plan that saved his life.

Through genetic sequencing and targeted therapies, the team identified specific mutations driving Jordan’s cancer and matched him with the most effective treatments. Today, Jordan is thriving – a testament to how donor-funded precision medicine is transforming outcomes for children with complex conditions.

“Without the support of donors and the advanced precision medicine program at SickKids, Jordan’s story could have had a very different ending. Your generosity doesn’t just fund research and equipment – it gives children like Jordan their futures back.”
